• The bicycle: although any road bike is suitable, we would recommend the use of gran fondo typed road bicycles following the below notes advices. A gravel bike fitted with more normal tires would also be a good choice.

1.1. Frame and wheels

Due to the variety of pavement types and the possibility of dirt road and asphalt in poor condition sections, it is recommended not to equip your bicycle with sensitive material, such as carbon wheels.

1.2. Gears

Considering the maximum slopes, combined with the requirement of the terrain as well as the length of stages, we suggest to adapt the transmission to the event.

Compact type crankset would be a 50-34 or 50-36. Besides, we recommend providing the cadence in demanding sections. Another option is the triple crankset 52-39-30. In this case, keep in mind that technical equipment should be compatible for triple crankset.

We recommend the choice of a maximal ratio of 34X32.

1.3. Handlebar Height

Attempt, whenever possible raising slightly the handlebar, either with rings or reversing the power steering. One cm may be sufficient to gain comfort in delicate drops like those you’ll find and not suffering too much on your neck.

1.4. Tires

For those seeking comfort, especially in this kind of activities, it may be a good option to change the typical tire of 700 × 23 to 700 × 25 or even 700 x 28. This small change will allow us to play with the tire pressure. However, make sure the bike has enough space to accommodate this size of tire.
For those who want to get rid of punctures, we recommend tires (available in 700 × 23 and 700 × 25) with internal protection reinforcement. This feature increases a few grams the weight of the wheel, although that’s absolutely imperceptible for events with such characteristics as TRANSPYR BACKROADS.

1.5 Brakes

In TRANSPYR BACKROADS you will face some long, steep descents therefore the use of disc brakes is recommended or, at least, normal brakes but working on aluminium rims (both for the pavement and braking conditions, we do not recommend the use of carbon wheels).

  • Visibility elements:

The route of  TRANSPYR BACKROADS passes through tunnels where the use of lights is compulsory. You must carry them and use when needed.

2.1 Front and rear LED’s.
We recommend using LED lighting. Increasingly smaller and more powerful models, which can be fixed directly to the handlebar and post seat (no rigid anchor needed), are available on the market.

The organization strongly recommends the use of a back, powerful red light thorough all the event.

2.2. Reflective elements.
A reflective vest may be enough to significantly improve your visibility on the road in case of bad weather. However, we suggest to better use reflective clothes always and overall.

  • Spare parts.

3.1 Besides spare parts such as pump and tube, we suggest participants to carry in the luggage replacement tires and a set of brake pads, as well as spare parts –shoe cleat sfor instance- and tools they may need during the event.

3.2 It is also recommended the hiring of our optional mechanical service, to ensure that the material will be always ready and able to fully enjoy this demanding challenge.

  • Hydration and Food.

Although the organization establishes solid and liquid stations along the route and at the end of each stage, we recommend, considering the demanding profile in some sections, to carry some kind of nutritional supplement and / or energy bars for reinforcement, and to start the stage with at least one liter of beverage with you.
